•The Bielski partisans were an organization of Jewish partisans who rescued Jews from extermination and fought against Nazi Germany in German occupied Poland.
•Under the Bielski's protection, 1,236 Jews survived the war. •It was one of many amazing rescue missions in the Holocaust. •For two years the group hid in the Naliboki forest where they had a community of underground bunkers of consisting a kitchen, a bathhouse, shops, schools, a medical clinic, and a synagogue. •The group were led by brothers of the Bielski family: Tuvia, Zus, Asael, and Aron. •It was formed in August of 1941 when the parents and other members of Bielski family were killed in the ghetto. Along with neighbors of the ghetto they hid in the nearby forest and where they relied on the help of members of the nearby Polish village. |
•The group originally started out as 40 people but eventually grew to 1,236 people after infiltrating ghettos.
•The group became affiliated with Soviet organizations that hid in the Naliboki forest as well and with whom they would collaborate with on war efforts.
•In the summer of 1944, the Soviets had took over the German occupied areas in Poland, now Belarus, and the Bielski partisan group finally emerged from the forest.
•Tuvia, Zus, and Aron along with most of the members of the partisan group emigrated to the United States.
•Their brother Asael however was drafted by the Soviet Red Army in 1945 and was killed in battle six months later.
•Tuvia and Zus lived out their lives in New York City where they started families with women from their partisan group and ran a trucking company.
•Tuvia died in New York City in 1987 and Zus died of a heart attack in 1995 in Brooklyn.
•The youngest brother Aron is still alive today.
